Directors Ally Pankiw and Kate Herron have publicly rejected opportunities to work on HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series, citing JK Rowling’s views on transgender issues as the reason. Pankiw shared a screenshot of an exchange with her representative, where she was asked if she would consider working on the project, to which she responded with a firm ‘no’.
Rowling’s Views on Transgender Issues
Rowling has been at the center of controversy over her views on transgender issues, which she has defended as a defense of women’s sports, female-only facilities, and sex-based legal protections. Despite this, many in the entertainment industry have criticized her stance, with some accusing her of being transphobic.
Pankiw and Herron are not the only ones who have spoken out against Rowling’s views. British actress Bel Powley, who plays Harry Potter’s aunt Petunia Dursley in the series, has also expressed her disagreement with Rowling’s views, stating that the trans community deserves ‘safety, dignity, and respect’.
HBO has defended its relationship with Rowling, stating that she has the right to express her personal views and that her involvement in the series will not affect the hiring of writers, performers, and production staff.
