York County, Nebraska, is proposing budget plans to address the growing number of court cases and criminal activity in the area. The York County Sheriff’s Office and the county attorney’s office have met with the York County Commissioners to discuss their proposed budgets.
Budget Increase Requests
The York County Sheriff’s Office is requesting a 6.16% budget increase, citing reasons such as insurance costs, the addition of another officer due to increased volume, and new vehicles. Captain Josh Gillespie, who will likely take over as county sheriff due to the retirement of Sheriff Paul Vrbka, presented the preliminary budget.
The county attorney’s office is requesting a 13% budget increase, primarily for personnel costs. According to York County Attorney Gary Olson, the county currently has the equivalent of 2.65 attorneys, but math shows they need the equivalent of five full-time lawyers.
