The Uniontown Area School District is taking a significant step in promoting school spirit and community engagement with the launch of the Red Raider Athletics Network (RRAN), a streaming service that will cover various school events, including sports, graduation, and school board meetings.
Background and Goals
Joshua Scully, a social studies teacher and basketball coach at Marclay Middle School, is spearheading the initiative. Scully, who graduated from Uniontown in 2004, aims to create a platform that showcases the district’s events and provides students with hands-on experience in broadcasting. The RRAN is not exclusive to sports and will also stream non-athletic events, such as the grand march for the prom and school board meetings.
The school board has given its blessing for the project, and a broadcasting course will be offered quarterly for one credit. Chuck Durso will teach the class, which has already generated interest among students. The goal is to have students run the network, with Scully and other volunteers providing assistance as needed.
Technical Aspects and Community Involvement
The RRAN will utilize Hudl technology, which allows for remote camera operation. Scully plans to use a mobile unit to broadcast events from various venues, including those without permanently installed cameras. This will enable the network to cover a wider range of sports, such as golf, cross country, and track & field, benefiting parents who may not be able to attend events due to work obligations.
Local establishments have expressed interest in streaming RRAN events, and Scully is exploring partnerships with nearby schools to make away contests available on the network. The RRAN is seeking sponsors, and those interested can contact Scully or athletic director Harry Kaufman via email.
The RRAN’s development is a testament to the district’s commitment to innovation and community engagement. By providing a platform for students to gain broadcasting experience and showcasing school events, the network aims to foster a sense of school spirit and pride among students, parents, and the broader community.
