Air Traffic Control Issues Persist

A year and a half after a deadly midair collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, safety concerns persist. Last Tuesday, a passenger jet got too close to Marine One, the helicopter carrying President Donald Trump, due to a telecommunications problem.

Air Traffic Control Issues

The incident occurred when Marine One lifted off from the Ellipse, just south of the White House. Despite typical protocols to halt flights from the nearby airport when the President is taking off, at least one American Airlines regional jet got within the protective bubble around the helicopter.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that there was a momentary loss of separation, but the President was never in danger. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy attributed the breakdown to a telecommunications issue between the Marine One team and the FAA.

Investigation and Response

The FAA has convened a safety review panel to investigate the incident and is working to enhance coordination and boost signal frequencies. The agency has also implemented new rules requiring helicopter pilots around busy airports to be in contact with air traffic control.

These efforts aim to address the challenges of managing congested airspace with heightened security, old equipment, staffing shortages, and new legislation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has made 50 safety recommendations, with more than half directed to the FAA.
