Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens has endorsed her former opponent Abdul El-Sayed after a narrow primary defeat. Stevens, who was viewed as the more moderate Democrat in the race, drew contrasts with El-Sayed on issues such as Israel and the direction of the Democratic Party.

Despite their differences, Stevens said she would support El-Sayed, who has emerged as a prominent figure on the party’s progressive flank. El-Sayed has rejected the label of ‘socialist,’ but supports several progressive policies, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and establishing Medicare for all.
Stevens, who identifies as a ‘Zionist Democrat’ and a ‘proud… Democratic labor capitalist,’ said she believes in democracy and will stand by her positions. She also drew a clear distinction between El-Sayed and socialism, noting that her former rival had rejected the label and that she thinks socialism is ‘dangerous.’
