The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a short-term government funding stopgap early Saturday morning, after days of drawn-out negotiations. Both chambers of Congress now leave for the entire month of August.
Key Provisions
The Senate’s continuing resolution adjusts funding for certain programs through Dec. 11, including boosts for SNAP, FEMA disaster relief, wildfire management, U.S. Navy shipbuilding, small business loans, and federal housing programs. It also extends some programs set to run out of funding on Oct. 1, such as the Food for Peace program and veterans’ healthcare support.
The bill temporarily prohibits the Office of Management and Budget from tasking political appointees with decisions on grant awards and prevents new funding for immigration enforcement agencies. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., stated that the bill gives lawmakers the necessary breathing room to work out a budget that helps working families.
