A cardiologist at the South Heart Clinic in Harlingen, Texas, is warning people about the dangers of energy drinks, particularly for those with heart issues. Dr. James Stone says that energy drinks can have a harmful effect on the nervous system and can lead to potential heart rhythm issues.
The Risks of Energy Drinks
Energy drinks typically contain caffeine, added sugars, and other additives, including legal stimulants such as taurine, guarana, and L-carnitine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these stimulants can have a harmful effect on the nervous system. Stone advises that people with heart issues should avoid energy drinks at all costs, as they can trigger life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
Stone recommends that people drink black coffee instead of energy drinks, as it comes with health benefits and does not contain the same level of stimulants. He also advises that people should not exceed the daily limit of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents do not consume energy drinks, and Stone agrees, saying that they can be borderline addicting and can lead to a range of health problems.
