Just a short drive from the heart of Frisco, tucked inside The Shops at Willow Bend in neighboring Plano, sits one of the most genuinely delightful family attractions in all of North Texas — the Crayola Experience. But before you scroll past thinking this is just a place to color inside the lines, let me stop you right there. This 60,000-square-foot creative playground is the kind of place that makes adults forget they were ever cynical about fun.
I walked in expecting a gift shop with a few activities bolted on. What I found instead was a fully immersive world built around the joy of color, imagination, and hands-on creativity. There are more than 25 attractions spread across the space, and I mean real, interactive experiences — not velvet ropes and “please don’t touch” signs. You are encouraged to touch, make, melt, and create at every single turn.
One of the standout moments for me was the Wrap It Up station, where you design your own custom crayon wrapper, name your color, and walk away with a one-of-a-kind crayon that nobody else in the world has. It sounds simple, but there is something deeply satisfying about holding something you made with your own two hands. My crayon was named “Frisco Sunset Orange,” and I stand by that choice entirely.
The Melted Crayon Art station is another crowd favorite, and for good reason. You select your colors, arrange them, and watch as heat transforms them into vivid, swirling works of abstract art. Kids lose their minds over it. Grown adults lose their minds over it. I watched a grandfather and his granddaughter spend a solid twenty minutes perfecting their masterpiece, and the look on both their faces was exactly the same — pure, uncomplicated happiness.
There is also a 4D movie experience, a coloring café, and a station where you can star in your very own hand-drawn animated cartoon. The programming is thoughtful and layered enough that toddlers and tweens are equally entertained, which — if you have kids of different ages — you know is basically a miracle.
Admission runs around $25 per person, with children under two getting in free, and the experience easily fills three to four hours without anyone checking their phone. Parking at The Shops at Willow Bend is plentiful and free, and the mall itself has plenty of dining options for before or after your visit.
Whether you are planning a birthday outing, a rainy Saturday with the family, or honestly just looking for somewhere genuinely joyful to spend an afternoon, the Crayola Experience delivers in the most colorful way possible. Come with an open mind, leave with a custom crayon, and do not be surprised if you find yourself booking a return visit before you even make it back to your car.
