Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has inaugurated its new East Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Station, a significant milestone in the airport’s extensive $12 billion DFW Forward capital improvement plan. This initiative aims to modernize the airport, which first opened its doors 51 years ago.
Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
The new East facility, often referred to as ARFF, is the first phase in a strategic plan to consolidate four existing stations into two. The West Station, which will merge stations 2 and 4, is expected to open later this year. The East Station is equipped with 10 apparatus bays, 21 dorm rooms, and specialized areas for training, fitness, hazardous material support, and decontamination. It also includes an F5-rated storm shelter, ensuring robust safety measures.
In addition to the new station, DFW Airport has introduced a state-of-the-art mobile command post. This 40-foot vehicle, costing nearly $3 million, is equipped with advanced cameras, satellite connectivity, and multiagency radio interoperability. It allows for real-time incident management across the airfield and can operate independently for two days.
Federal Support and Local Impact
The project has received substantial federal backing, with over $75 million in funding secured through the FAA Airport Improvement Program. This support underscores the importance of maintaining high safety standards at one of the world’s busiest airports. In 2025, DFW was ranked the fourth-busiest commercial airport globally, with over 743,000 flight operations.
During a recent board meeting, DFW Airport awarded contracts for additional firefighting equipment. Oncor will provide and install electric service infrastructure for the new stations, while new firefighting vehicles will replace part of the current fleet. These investments are crucial for enhancing the airport’s emergency response capabilities.
Vernon Evans, chair of the DFW Airport board of directors, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “DFW serves as the global gateway and economic engine for North Texas, and the completion of this project celebrates DFW’s commitment to our long-term vision for growth, while ensuring we maintain the highest standards of safety for our customers, employees, and community.”
