Nearly a month after 18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, investigators have completed the state’s autopsy, and prosecutors are preparing to present evidence to a grand jury.

Investigation Update

A newly completed independent analytical review of photographs, videos, GPS coordinates, and witness accounts concludes that the available evidence still leaves a ‘material gap’ in the timeline between Wells’ last independently corroborated sighting and the reported departure of the boat that transported him to the island.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said his legal team continues to pursue its own investigation, with forensic audio specialists reviewing the complete Sea Tow emergency call from July 4 and ocean engineering experts examining how Wells’ body ultimately came to be recovered near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.

State officials have warned the public about fake documents circulating online, including a purported toxicology report that Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said is fraudulent.

Call for Answers

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, said she intends to continue pressing for answers, and a recent social media video expressed her desire for truth. ‘I am asking for answers; that is it, that is all,’ she said.

Public attention has not diminished, with hundreds of miles from Mississippi, members of the New Orleans community gathering for a second-line procession to honor Wells and call for justice.
