Colorado Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser and his Republican challenger, Victor Marx, are facing questions over their campaign donations. Weiser, the current Colorado attorney general, has raised almost $7 million since announcing his bid for governor in January 2025. However, recent reports have flagged the timing of some of Weiser’s campaign contributions, including donations from attorneys at the Denver-based law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, which was involved in a settlement with Weiser’s office.

Investigation into Marx’s Campaign Finances

Marx’s campaign is under investigation by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office for allegedly accepting 197 illegal donations totaling over $78,000. The complaint also claims the campaign accepted another $1,000 in illegal cash contributions. Marx’s campaign manager, Harry ‘Buddy’ Jericho, stated that the campaign does not dispute the findings but disputes any suggestion that the actions were intentional.

Weiser’s campaign spokesperson, Nate Jackson, said that Weiser’s campaign is people-powered and follows campaign finance laws. Jackson also clarified that the campaign donation from one of the individuals employed by Brownstein was made after the final settlement agreement was reached, and therefore does not present a conflict of interest.
