Joey Chestnut Pleads Guilty, Sentenced to Probation for Drunken Bar Slap

Joey Chestnut, the celebrated competitive eater, has pleaded guilty to battery after an incident at an Indiana bar on March 21 and was sentenced to probation; his attorney Mario Massillamany says Chestnut accepts responsibility while Chestnut maintains he was intoxicated and does not recall the event. The man involved says he recognized Chestnut, shook his hand and was then slapped on the left side of his face around 2 a.m. The case drew attention partly because Chestnut is preparing another run at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and recently set a world record at the Ultimate Bologna Showdown in Tennessee.

The night in question unfolded at a bar in Indiana, where the alleged victim told authorities he approached Chestnut, shook his hand and was struck moments later. Chestnut later told law enforcement he had been drinking and could not remember the interaction. Criminal charges were filed and resolved with Chestnut pleading guilty to battery and receiving probation as his sentence.

The officer’s affidavit paints a physical picture of the encounter. “The accused pulled [the victim] forward, moves closer and uses his right hand to strike [the victim] on the face with an open hand. [The victim] is observed reacting to the strike and moving his head downward and holding it there while the accused stands over him and [his friend],” the officer said in an affidavit obtained by Us Weekly. “[Chestnut] moves toward [the victim] again and [the victim] moves away from the accused.

“The touching was nude, insolent or angry because the open-handed strike was nonconsensual to the victim in a manner that caused pain while the accused allegedly used provocative language toward the victim to illicit a reaction.”

Chestnut’s lawyer, Mario Massillamany, told reporters that his client took “full responsibility for this misunderstanding.” That single line has been the public response from Chestnut’s camp, and it signals a desire to put the legal matter behind him quickly.

Outside the courtroom, Chestnut’s competitive future remains a big storyline. He’s locked in for another Nathan’s contest and will be chasing what would be his 18th title in his last 19 attempts, a level of dominance few athletes in any sport can match. Nathan’s barred him from the 2024 event after he signed a sponsorship with Impossible Foods, but the champion and the organizers hammered out sponsorship issues ahead of the 2025 contest so he could return.

On the field of competition he continues to deliver jaw-dropping numbers. Chestnut consumed 70.5 hot dogs and buns in the 10-minute Nathan’s format, a performance that keeps him the heavy favorite whenever he shows up. He’s also been active on the competitive-eating circuit beyond hot dogs, expanding his presence at specialty events and exhibition contests.

Most recently, Chestnut won the 2026 Ultimate Bologna Showdown in Tennessee, marking his third straight victory at that event. He reportedly ate 16 pounds of sausage in eight minutes and set a new world record, a feat that underscored his continued dominance and drew headlines even as the legal process concluded. That Tennessee event shows he’s still performing at elite levels despite the off-field distraction.

The incident that led to battery charges is a reminder that public figures are watched closely and that lapses in judgment can become legal problems. The alleged victim’s account — that he recognized Chestnut, shook his hand and was then struck — is the kind of detail that made this more than a simple bar scuffle. Chestnut’s admission that he was drunk and can’t recall the encounter factors into the plea and the eventual sentence.

For fans and critics alike, the story now splits into two tracks: the legal resolution and Chestnut’s competitive agenda. He has accepted the probation terms and faces the court’s judgment, and at the same time he’s preparing to defend his status in competitive eating arenas. Whatever comes next, Joey Chestnut’s name remains a focal point in both legal and sports coverage.
