A waterspout was seen off Cape Canaveral on Saturday, forming during another rainy day across much of the region. WESH 2 viewers sent in several photos of the waterspout, visible among the ships and other infrastructure out at the Port.
What is a waterspout?
Waterspouts generally fall into two categories: fair-weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Fair-weather waterspouts typically form over warm water along the dark, flat bases of developing cumulus clouds and are not usually linked to thunderstorms, NOAA explains. On the other hand, tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water or move from land to water.
