Prominent liberal podcaster and NYU professor Scott Galloway has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to publish a searchable database of affluent property owners who could be subject to the city’s proposed pied-à-terre tax.

Concerns Over Public Safety

Galloway, who is a property owner himself, called the database a ‘wanted poster’ for property owners, saying it endangers landowners like himself by making their personal information publicly accessible. He argued that the database could expose property owners to harassment and public safety risks.

The database, released by the city’s Department of Finance, allows users to search properties and view the names and addresses of owners whose non-primary residences could be subject to the proposed tax. A spokesperson for the department said publication of the property roll was required by state law.

Response from the Mayor’s Office

Mamdani’s office defended the decision, stating that the city publishes property tax rolls in accordance with the law, as it has done twice a year for years. The mayor’s office also noted that the tax property roll is not a list of properties subject to the pied-à-terre tax, but rather a state-mandated roll used to identify properties that may be subject to the surcharge.
