NHPS Reverses Course On School Transfer

New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) has reversed its decision to transfer Mauro Sheridan Assistant Principal Kerry Courcey to King/Robinson School. The change was announced in a personnel report at Monday’s Board of Education meeting.

Background

Courcey, a 35-year teaching veteran, has worked at Mauro Sheridan School for the last 24 years. In June, NHPS Supt. Madeline Negrón announced plans to transfer Courcey to an assistant principal role at King/Robinson School, prompting pushback from Mauro Sheridan parents and staffers.

State lawmakers Martin Looney and Pat Dillon later joined the call for the district to change course. The personnel report shows that NHPS has now transferred Courcey back to Mauro Sheridan, effective August 19.

Regina Carini, who had been set to take over Courcey’s assistant principal role at Mauro Sheridan, has instead been transferred to an assistant principal role at Lincoln Bassett School. Jennifer Kaye, an instructional literacy coach at Lincoln Bassett, has been promoted to the role of assistant principal at King/Robinson.

Reaction

Courcey expressed her excitement about returning to Mauro Sheridan, saying, “I am thrilled to return to Mauro Sheridan as assistant principal, where I’ve spent 24 of my 35 years with New Haven Public Schools!”

The district also reversed its decision to transfer Benjamin Jepson School math teacher Thomas Fargeorge to a third-grade classroom at Ross/Woodward School, citing a pending criminal court case.
