Man in stable condition after exchange of gunfire with security guards

A 39-year-old man was hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire with security guards on the Southeast Side of San Antonio, the San Antonio Police Department said. The shooting unfolded late Monday night in the 3300 block of Southeast Military Drive near Goliad Road and ended with the wounded man found behind a Gold’s Gym. SAPD and officers on scene spoke with KSAT as the investigation got underway.

Officers were called just after 9:30 p.m. to a parking lot where witnesses reported gunfire. Police say the man was allegedly shooting a gun in the lot, which prompted security personnel nearby to move in because they believed there was an active shooter situation. That initial confrontation set the scene for a brief but chaotic exchange.

According to SAPD, the security guards chased the man as the situation unfolded, and at some point the man fired at the guards. The security guards returned fire, and police say the man was struck multiple times. Those rounds did not immediately stop him from fleeing the area, authorities added.

Responding officers later located the man with multiple gunshot wounds behind a Gold’s Gym near the intersection of Goliad Road and Southeast Military Drive. He was transported to a local hospital and is now listed in stable condition, police reported. No additional victims have been identified and no other injuries were reported at the scene.

SAPD officers processed the scene and found shell casings and a magazine, evidence that supports accounts of exchanged gunfire. Police also said the man’s weapon has not been recovered, and detectives are working to determine where that firearm might have gone during the chaotic moments after the shooting. Those on-scene actions are part of a standard evidence collection and scene preservation process.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and security personnel as they pieced together the timeline, and they canvassed for surveillance footage that might clarify what happened. Surveillance from nearby businesses and traffic cameras can be crucial in parking lot incidents, officials said, because they often capture movement and interactions that are missed by eyewitnesses. SAPD emphasized that the investigation remains active as detectives follow leads and review footage.

City public safety officials noted the case involves private security personnel who returned fire, which can add layers of review about the use of force and the circumstances that led to the shooting. Authorities will examine whether security actions complied with local policies and state law while determining the full sequence of events. That review typically runs alongside criminal and evidentiary work carried out by detectives.

Neighbors and bystanders in the area described a tense scene when officers and emergency medical personnel arrived, with nearby businesses remaining closed for a period as the location was secured. Gold’s Gym sits close to the scene where the injured man was found, and the surrounding commercial strip was part of the canvas for investigators seeking video and witnesses. Traffic on Southeast Military Drive was briefly affected as officers worked through evidence collection.

SAPD urged anyone with information, photos, or video of the incident to come forward to help investigators corroborate what happened. The department reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released as they are confirmed. For now, the focus remains on establishing a clear timeline and locating the man’s firearm.
