A bear died in Clayton, New Mexico, after climbing on top of a power pole east of Gladstone. The New Mexico Department of Wildlife was notified, and residents were instructed to leave the bear alone. Unfortunately, the bear sustained fatal injuries before help arrived.
Safety Measures
To prevent encounters with bears, residents are advised to never feed or approach them. Feeding bears can train them to approach homes and people for more food, leading to potential danger. Instead, secure food, garbage, and recycling to avoid attracting bears.
Additional safety measures include removing bird feeders when bears are active, not leaving pet food outside, and cleaning and storing grills properly. Property owners can also protect their livestock and beehives by erecting fencing that keeps bears out.
Homeowners in bear country are encouraged to take steps to keep themselves, their property, and their pets safe. This includes storing garbage in closed, sturdy cans, feeding pets indoors, and keeping bird feeders and other potential attractants secure.
