New Traffic Cameras Expand Across Broken Arrow
The Borken Arrow City Council approved a five‑year master services agreement on June 16 to adopt an integrated policing ecosystem provided by Axon and associated vendors. Police Chief Lance Arnold told council the package bundles in‑car and body cameras, evidence management, in‑car systems, Axon‑911 and AI overlays (for translation/transcription), Dedrone drone‑detection, vehicle intelligence and VR training tools.
The growing camera network is part of the city’s broader Real-Time Information Center initiative, which gives officers access to live traffic conditions and video from strategically placed cameras throughout Broken Arrow. Officials say the system is intended to improve public safety while helping first responders make faster, more informed decisions.
In May, 2025, The Broken Arrow Police Department presented the scope and rationale for a multi-year Real Time Information Center build-out at the City Council meeting.
Chief Arnold and staff described an ecosystem already under way and plans to expand it to 30 intersections, with multiple stationary and PTZ cameras per intersection, additional fixed and mobile cameras for special events, and partnerships to ingest voluntary camera feeds from schools, businesses and homeowners associations.
How the Camera System Works
Unlike red-light enforcement cameras used in some cities, Broken Arrow’s traffic cameras are primarily designed to monitor traffic flow, assist emergency responders and provide investigative leads following crimes or serious traffic incidents.
Video from the system allows dispatchers and officers to observe developing situations, identify traffic congestion, coordinate emergency responses and review footage when investigating criminal activity.
Helping Police Solve Crimes
According to city officials, the camera network has become another valuable investigative tool for the Broken Arrow Police Department.
When a crime occurs, investigators can review footage from nearby intersections and major roadways to help establish timelines, identify suspect vehicles or locate witnesses. Combined with other investigative methods, the cameras can provide critical information during an active investigation.
Supporting Traffic Management
The system also helps traffic engineers monitor congestion and respond to changing traffic conditions throughout the city.
During severe weather, major events or roadway incidents, city staff can evaluate traffic flow in real time and coordinate responses that help keep vehicles moving safely.
Protecting Privacy
City officials emphasize that the cameras are focused on public streets and intersections and are not intended for continuous surveillance of private property.
Access to video is generally limited to authorized personnel and is used for legitimate public safety, emergency management and investigative purposes. The city says the program is designed to balance community safety with privacy protections.
A Growing Smart City
As Broken Arrow continues to grow, investments in technology are becoming an increasingly important part of city operations. The Real-Time Information Center works alongside police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel to improve situational awareness and coordinate responses across the community.
Officials say additional technology investments will continue supporting Broken Arrow’s commitment to public safety while helping prepare the city for future growth.
