John Jay High coach arrested for alleged sexual relationship with 17-year-old student

An arrest affidavit says Chad Allen Rodriguez, a physics and astronomy teacher and coach at John Jay High School in San Antonio, faces a charge for an improper relationship with a 17-year-old student; Bexar County jail records show he was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center and the Northside Independent School District has placed him on administrative leave as the investigation continues at the campus on Marbach Road.

School officials say Rodriguez, who joined the district in August 2016, was pulled off campus after authorities moved in, and district representatives are cooperating with investigators. The affidavit that led to the arrest describes allegations that unfolded over several months and were first noticed by other students. The case landed quickly inside the criminal system when the district referred it to law enforcement.

According to the affidavit, the matter came to light after one student reported seeing a 17-year-old and Rodriguez alone inside his classroom, and that information was passed to staff the following day. Investigators later interviewed the teen, who said she first met Rodriguez in October 2025 and described a relationship that began with flirting and eye contact. The document alleges the conduct escalated to kissing and, ultimately, repeated sexual encounters during the school year.

The affidavit also states the two exchanged phone numbers and sent explicit photos to one another, a detail the teen reportedly shared with investigators. Surveillance footage obtained by detectives is cited in the affidavit as corroborating evidence, showing the student entering Rodriguez’s classroom alone for a period of time with another student observing through a window. That footage is described as one piece of a broader set of statements and evidence officials reviewed.

Bexar County jail records list Rodriguez as having been booked on Saturday on a charge of improper relationship between an educator and a student, a crime that carries significant legal and professional consequences. The Northside Independent School District confirmed Rodriguez’s roles as a physics and astronomy teacher and as a football and track coach at John Jay High School, and immediately placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal inquiry. The district says it is fully cooperating with law enforcement while the probe continues.

School communities are often jolted when a trusted adult faces such allegations, and parents at John Jay High School are likely to have a lot of questions about safety and oversight. District officials will need to answer how concerns were escalated and what safeguards are in place to prevent similar situations. Administrators also must balance transparent communication with the legal realities of an active investigation and the privacy rights of the students involved.

From a procedural standpoint, investigators appear to have followed a typical path: an initial report from students, interviews with witnesses and the alleged victim, review of surveillance video, and arrest after probable cause was established. Rodriguez was reportedly arrested off campus, and the affidavit and footage are central to the case as it moves through the criminal justice system. Court proceedings and any formal charges beyond the initial booking will determine the next public steps.

This kind of allegation triggers multiple review streams inside a school district, including personnel actions and coordination with law enforcement. Rodriguez’s hire date in August 2016 and his roles as a teacher and coach will be part of the personnel file that district investigators and, if necessary, court officials examine. For parents and students at John Jay High School, the immediate focus will be on ensuring student welfare and clarity on how incidents are reported and handled.
