Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has appointed Ihor Klymenko, the country’s former top cop, to lead the national security and defence council. This move comes after the dismissal of a popular young defence minister sparked protests for a second day in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

The protests, which began on Thursday, are demanding that Zelenskiy reappoint the former defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, who had aimed to modernise the defence ministry. Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech expert, has been partly credited with Ukraine’s recent military successes in the war with Russia.
The ousting of Fedorov came amid a rift with Ukraine’s military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. The former defence minister accused Syrskyi of sabotaging his work, which led to his dismissal. Zelenskiy has proposed Yevhenii Khmara, a top security operative overseeing Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russia, to succeed Fedorov as defence minister.
