As primary ballots begin to arrive in mailboxes in Central Washington, voters may be confused about who President Donald Trump has endorsed in the District 4 contest to succeed U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse. Yakima Republican Amanda McKinney and Prosser Republican Jerrod Sessler are both claiming to have the President’s endorsement, and are competing for the vote of Trump supporters in the August 4 top-two primary.

McKinney, a known name in the upper Yakima Valley as a Yakima County Commissioner, said she trusts the electorate to make an informed decision. Sessler, on the other hand, claims to have a letter with Trump’s signature, which he says proves the President’s support for his candidacy. Sessler also criticized McKinney for her past support of Newhouse, who voted to impeach Trump.
McKinney and Sessler are both confident they will emerge in the top two after the primary, with McKinney stating she is the only candidate who has earned the President’s endorsement. The sole Democrat in the race, West Richland’s John Duresky, believes he will advance after the primary results are tallied, citing the division among Republican voters.
