The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City has urged Catholics to stop attending St. Michael Chapel in Bethany, citing a schism involving the Society of St. Pius X. The Archdiocese stated that SSPX priests are now considered ‘schismatic’ by the Catholic Church.
Schism Involving the Society of St. Pius X
The situation escalated last Saturday when the SSPX appealed to the Vatican against a decree declaring the group in schism with the Catholic Church. According to the National Catholic Register, the decree was issued after the SSPX consecrated four bishops without papal authorization.
Catholics seeking the traditional Latin Mass were encouraged to attend St. Damien of Molokai Catholic Church in Edmond. The Archdiocese also urged Catholics who have formally joined the St. Michael Chapel or consistently adopted its teachings to reconcile with the Catholic Church by contacting their parish priest or the archbishop’s office.
