Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) has released its interim academic assessment results, showing encouraging progress in early literacy among its highest-need students. However, the district is struggling to meet its math proficiency goals, particularly in middle school.
Reading Progress
According to the report, 29.2% of first graders scored at or above grade-level proficiency in reading by the end of the school year, exceeding the district’s annual target by 6.2 percentage points. Second graders posted even stronger results, with 33% reaching proficiency, or 8.7 percentage points above the district’s annual benchmark.
Math Challenges
While middle school students showed modest improvement in mathematics, district officials said the gains were not enough to meet annual benchmarks. Among sixth grade students in targeted groups, 21.2% achieved proficiency on the district’s i-Ready assessment, an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the previous school year, but still 1.4 percentage points below the district’s interim goal of 22.6%.
To improve math achievement, APS plans to implement more intensive classroom interventions during the upcoming school year.
