A U.S. citizen who had been held in Iran since 2024 has been released, according to President Donald Trump and her lawyer. The citizen, identified as Dena Karari, was released after being subjected to a coercive exit ban and interrogated dozens of times by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.
Background
Karari had been working with a nonprofit organization called the Children of Mehr Foundation, which helped impoverished children in Iran with private donor support and authorization of an OFAC license. Her lawyer, Jared Genser, said that her release would not have happened without the efforts of President Trump.
Genser also urged Iran to drop charges against Iranians who worked locally for the foundation. As many as five other Americans are currently being held in Iran, including Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, who have both been publicly designated as wrongfully detained by the State Department.
