A person has died after a minivan drove onto a ferry on Martha’s Vineyard and crashed last week. The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the Steamship Authority’s Vineyard Haven Terminal.
The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that the driver, who has not been publicly identified, had died. Prosecutors said no charges had been brought in the incident, adding that the district attorney’s office was not directly involved in the incident.
The vehicle traversed the length of the deck, which was empty at the time, and hit the vessel’s stern loading doors on the far side of the deck, according to the Steamship Authority. No other passengers or crew members were injured.
The minivan was removed from the ferry and trips on the M/V Island Home through the noon departure were canceled. Later that day, the Steamship Authority said the M/V Island Home had been cleared by the U.S. Coast Guard to return to Woods Hole, where maintenance personnel were set to assess the damage and determine if any repairs were needed.
