The Chicago Daily News building, located at 2 N. Riverside Plaza, has been designated as a landmark by the City Council. The Art Deco skyscraper, built in 1929, was the former home of the Chicago Daily News and is situated directly across from the Lyric Opera building.
History of the Building
The building was designed by Holabird and Root, a renowned Chicago architecture firm, and features a large riverfront plaza along the south branch of the Chicago River. It housed the headquarters and printing press of the Chicago Daily News from 1929 to 1960, and was home to notable writers, reporters, and cartoonists such as Ben Hecht, Carl Sandburg, and Mike Royko.
The landmarking report outlines what’s protected, including the plaza, rooflines, main lobbies, connecting staircase, and second-floor concourse. The building’s owners requested the landmark status to take advantage of a city incentive that allows for a reduction in property taxes for rehab projects at landmarked sites.
