New York City’s Rikers Island correctional facility hosted a World Cup watch party for its inmates. More than 100 inmates dressed in tan uniforms watched the semifinal match between England and Argentina in a gymnasium at the complex’s main intake center.
The event was part of a series of watch parties the jail has been hosting since the tournament kicked off last month for inmates who have shown good behavior. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the event, chatting with inmates about the tournament.
The inmates were seated at tables facing a projection screen showing the game, with colorful balloon towers topped by soccer ball balloons framing the screen. The mayor took a seat at one of the first tables and started chatting about the tournament.
