Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., offered rare praise to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham for backing the DEFIANCE Act, a bill that would allow victims of nonconsensual AI-generated deepfake pornography to file civil lawsuits.
Background on the Bill
The DEFIANCE Act, which Ocasio-Cortez and Graham collaborated on, passed the Senate in January by unanimous consent. The bill would enable victims to recover $150,000 in liquidated damages, or $250,000 if the conduct was connected to actual or attempted sexual assault, stalking, or harassment.
Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged Graham’s instrumental role in securing bipartisan support for the legislation, which aims to protect individuals, particularly kids and women, from nonconsensual AI-developed porn.
However, the House version of the bill has yet to advance past the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for the House to take action on the bill.
