A central Iowa woman is making medical history. Elizabeth Wehrle, 36, of Montezuma, received a rare four-organ transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She underwent a second double-lung transplant, along with a liver and kidney transplant.
A Historic Surgery
Doctors say this is the first known quadruple-organ transplant in the U.S. involving retransplanted lungs. Wehrle said she is grateful for everyone who helped make the surgery successful. Doctors say she is recovering well and is expected to return home to Iowa on Friday.
