Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been directed to halt most traffic stops after two people were fatally shot during federal immigration enforcement operations in Maine and Texas.
Investigations Underway
In Maine, local officials have asked for a full and impartial probe into the shooting of Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero in Biddeford. The Maine Attorney General is investigating the shooting alongside local and federal authorities.
In Texas, the shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston is being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the FBI’s Houston field office. The Harris County District Attorney’s office has also launched its own investigation into the killing.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has stated that the agency’s Office of Inspector General’s Boston field office has taken over the investigation in Maine.
ICE has also announced plans to expand the use of body cameras for its agents.
