The Writers Guild of America has filed a lawsuit to block Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, citing concerns that the deal would decrease competition for screenwriting services and harm its members.
The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, alleges that the merged entity would have the incentive and ability to lower costs by suppressing writers’ wages and reducing output.
A spokesperson for Paramount did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Impact on Writers
The Writers Guild argues that with fewer competitors, the merged Paramount-Warner Bros entity would have the power to dictate terms to writers, leading to lower wages and fewer employment opportunities.
The lawsuit is the latest challenge to the deal, which has already faced opposition from California and a group of 11 states.
