El Paso health officials have confirmed two new cases of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus, affecting a man in his 80s and a woman in her 60s. The man, residing in the 79907 zip code, is being treated in a local hospital, while the woman from the 79932 zip code is recovering in a rehabilitation facility.
Prevention and Symptoms
West Nile Virus is spread through bites from infected mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, headaches, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting, as well as swollen lymph nodes. According to health officials, one in five people never develop the virus, but 1 in 150 people will develop severe neuroinvasive disease affecting the brain and nervous system.
The City of El Paso Department of Public Health advises the community to exercise caution while outdoors and to observe the 4 D’s to prevent the spread of the virus.
