Heirs’ Property Workshop

Landowners and families in the Texarkana area have an opportunity to learn how to protect inherited property during an upcoming Heirs’ Property Training. The free, three-part training will cover the basics of heirs’ property, explain why it can lead to land loss, and provide practical steps families can take to prevent or resolve ownership issues.

Understanding Heirs’ Property

Heirs’ property refers to land that has been passed from one generation to the next without a clear estate plan or probate process, often leaving multiple family members with shared ownership. This can make it difficult to sell, improve, or pass down the land, and in some cases, can increase the risk of families losing the land altogether.

According to Angela Moore, program coordinator for the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at Prairie View A&M University, heirs’ property is an important issue for families in the Texarkana area. Moore said that for many families, their home and land are among their greatest assets, but without an effective estate plan, property may become heirs’ property when an owner passes away.

The training is being offered in response to interest from residents, and organizers hope that participants will leave with a better understanding of their options and feel prepared to protect family land. The training will also address several common misconceptions surrounding heirs’ property, including the idea that the heir who pays the most property taxes has more authority or greater rights than the other heirs.

The Heirs’ Property Training is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 28 at the Terry Lee Rogers Recreation Center in Texarkana. Registration is required, and lunch will be provided.
