A bison in Yellowstone National Park charged a tourist, sending him 8 feet in the air. The incident occurred during mating season, when bison can become aggressive. A professional photographer witnessed the event and captured it on video.
Details of the Incident
The bison, a bull, was resting in a dirt pile when a 65-year-old man and his grandson took out their phones to take a picture. As they started to walk away, a pickup truck passed by, causing the bison to get up and charge. The truck quickly drove away, and the bison zeroed in on the man and his grandson, who had hid behind some trees.
The video shows the bison chasing the man around trees. The bull eventually caught up to the man, sending him about 8 feet in the air. After the man fell to the ground, the photographer stopped recording and tried to distract the bison. Other campers joined in on chasing out the bison.
The man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The National Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison and other large animals, as they can run up to 35 mph and become especially aggressive during the summer breeding season.
