A U.S. District Judge has ruled that President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over his leaked tax returns was filed for an ‘improper purpose.’ The judge accused Trump and his lawyers of manipulating the court system when he sued a federal agency under his control.
Background of the Lawsuit
The lawsuit, filed in January, accused the IRS of failing to prevent a leak of Trump’s tax information to news outlets between 2018 and 2020. However, the judge said the lawsuit was an attempt to use the court to provide legitimacy to an agreement that would confer immunity to people and entities affiliated with the President and earmark billions of dollars from American taxpayers to redress grievances not defined in the law.
The judge also referred one of Trump’s lawyers, Alejandro Brito, for potential disciplinary action and characterized the $10 billion complaint as an exercise in self-dealing. Another lawyer, Daniel Epstein, will not be granted permission to file within the Southern District of Florida for up to a year.
