Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced over $2.3 million in funding to support maritime infrastructure in several cities, including Green Bay, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Menasha, and Racine. The funding will be used to maintain and operate lift bridges, which are essential to the state’s maritime economy.
Importance of Lift Bridges
Wisconsin’s lift bridges play a critical role in keeping the state’s economy strong by allowing taller ships to pass through and access the state’s ports. The Lift Bridge Assistance (LBA) program, administered by WisDOT, reimburses cities for the costs of maintaining and operating these bridges.
The 2025-27 Biennial Budget secured an additional $265,900 annually for the LBA program, which will help support local infrastructure. The city of Menasha will receive $116,122.55 for their Racine St. lift bridge, and nine other lift bridges will receive funding to cover maintenance expenses.
Previous Efforts
Under Governor Evers’ leadership, Wisconsin has improved over 9,600 miles of roads and 2,400 bridges since 2019. The state has also invested in key transportation infrastructure, including $1.1 billion in new funding for the 2025-27 Biennial Budget.
