A strong heat wave has built into a heat dome in the western United States, bringing extremely hot temperatures to the region. Forecasters are warning of widespread temperature highs between 105 and 115 degrees, which could break numerous local temperature records and increase the risk of wildfires and heat-related illnesses.
Extreme Heat Warnings
Extreme heat warnings have been issued for much of the western US, including Montana, Utah, and the Dakotas. The weather service office in Billings, Montana, has warned that temperatures in the region could reach all-time highs on Sunday, climbing well into the triple digits and potentially up to 112 degrees.
Salt Lake City could also challenge its all-time high temperature on Sunday, with forecasters predicting it could reach 107 degrees. Most of Utah is under an extreme heat warning, which is scheduled to remain in place through Tuesday morning.
The heat has also spread across the Dakotas, with forecasters issuing extreme heat warnings for vast sections of both states. In Bismarck, North Dakota, conditions are expected to be “dangerously hot,” with heat indices ticking upward to 100 or 110 degrees through Monday, and low temperatures in the 70s offering little reprieve.
