The Colombian Soccer Federation has condemned death threats made against midfielder Jaminton Campaz and his family. The threats came after Colombia’s Round of 16 loss to Switzerland in a penalty shootout.
Campaz missed a crucial scoring chance in extra time, and his social media accounts were subsequently flooded with negative comments and threats. As a precaution, he did not return to Colombia with his teammates.
Investigation Demanded
The Colombian Soccer Federation expressed solidarity with Campaz and called on the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the threats. The federation stated that no athlete should be subjected to intimidation for representing their country in a sporting context.
Campaz shared a photo on Instagram, covering his face in frustration, and pleaded for respect. He wrote that football should be a space for unity, respect, and hope, not hatred, intimidation, or violence.
