The Teton County Health Department (TCHD) is preparing to apply for multiple initiatives through the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), a federal program created to strengthen rural health care. Director of Health Travis Riddell said the agency is firming up ideas and working with other organizations for portions that require multiple joint applicants.

Rural Health Care Challenges

Riddell expressed concerns about the context behind the RHTP, citing the program’s creation through Congress’ passage of H.R.1, which contains downsides in terms of health care funding, including cuts and changes to Medicaid and Medicare. He noted that rural communities are expected to have access to fewer financial resources, which is somewhat offset by the RHTP.

Riddell appreciates the focus at the federal level on rural health care and the willingness to engage. He also values the bottom-up approach that gives local communities and health care providers the chance to brainstorm, create, and implement their own solutions.

Application Process

The application period closes on August 2, and the state committee will convene on August 9 to begin reviewing submissions. The Wyoming Department of Health plan requires all funds to be distributed before October 1.
