The water tower outside Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, built in 1960, is being removed to make way for a larger replacement near Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The tower holds 750,000 gallons of water but is no longer in use.
Replacement Plans
A new water tower near Carver-Hawkeye Arena will have a capacity of 2.7 million gallons. According to a 2025 document from the Iowa Board of Regents, the larger capacity tower is sized and designed to serve the future patient care tower and the overall campus.
The removal will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and continue through the weekend. Work will occur on weekends until the end of August.
