The Dearborn County Health Department is warning of an increase in confirmed cases of Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted infection. According to the health department, 37 confirmed cases of the infection have been reported this year, nine more than the 28 reported all of last year.
Importance of Screenings
Officials said people who are sexually active, are having unprotected sex, or are not in a mutually monogamous relationship should schedule a screening. Most people with Chlamydia don’t show symptoms and routine testing is the best way to detect the infection, according to the Dearborn County Health Department.
If left untreated, the infection can lead to long-term health issues, including chronic pain, pregnancy complications, and infertility. Chlamydia is generally treated quickly with antibiotics.
People who would like to schedule free and confidential screenings can contact the Dearborn County Health Department at 812-537-8844.
