A new art installation in Akron’s Prentiss Park is encouraging visitors to think twice before littering. The artwork, which was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, features hollow letters made of metal mesh and rebar filled with collected garbage, spelling out the word ‘THINK’.
The Litter Letter Project
The installation is part of the Litter Letter Project, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of the consequences of littering and discourage the act. The project is made possible by local nonprofit Keep Akron Beautiful and the City of Akron.
Each letter in the installation is filled with litter collected by students from Akron Public Schools, including 16-year-old Khyre’Anna Louie and her classmates Jayd Foxworth and Stephawn Muhammad. The students were led by their teacher, Kyla McPhilliamy, who said the project was a student-led effort to make a positive impact on their community.
The installation is set up as a $2,500 per-year renewable sponsorship to replace the trash inside the installation and maintain the letters’ framework. The goal is to have at least one installation in every ward across the city with different words that make people think about litter, community, and engagement.
