Torrential rains have brought devastating floods to Hengzhou, a southern Chinese city of some one million residents. The floodwaters have also led to a snake invasion, with around 900 snakes, many of them venomous, on the loose.
Snake Invasion
The snakes escaped from flooded reptile farms in the area, and one woman has died after being bitten by a snake, possibly a cobra. Chinese authorities have issued warnings to villagers to stay clear of the snakes and have mobilized snake catchers to capture the reptiles.
Local hospitals have sufficient antivenom serum stocks to handle the crisis, but the situation remains critical. The city is known for its snake breeding industry, with over 100 snake species recorded in the region.
Flood Damage
The floods have also caused significant damage to the city, with over 16,000 pigs washed away and two zebras, one humpback ox, three miniature horses, and two donkeys escaping from a flooded zoo.
The local government has issued guidelines to residents to avoid nighttime outdoor activities and to stay away from areas where snakes are likely to appear.
