Natrona County has received new grant funding to support mountain shelters and archery targets, the Natrona County Parks & Recreation Board of Trustees announced. The grants will offset recent county budget cuts, which reduced the mountain budget by $40,000.
Grant Funding Details
The county received two-thirds of its requested funding from the outdoor recreation council for shelters at Beartrap Meadows, and a $70,000 grant fully funded a request for new archery range targets and pathway maintenance.
Trustee and County Commissioner Dave North expressed excitement about the successful grant applications, stating that outside funding takes the burden off the county and enables long-awaited improvements. Trustee John Hatcher also praised the grant awards, noting that they will help the county accomplish projects that have been pending for a long time.

The board also reviewed a post-action report on the Fourth of July weekend, which went relatively smoothly despite some minor issues with camping. The addition of larger dumpsters prevented trash overflows and “dumpster fires.” The board approved an addendum to the consent agenda to process several Alcova Reservoir trailer and cabin lot permits.
WWC Engineering held a public information meeting on June 24 for the Alcova cabin water and sewer study to explain the ongoing process to residents. Final fieldwork for the study is expected to be completed this month before a final draft is publicized.
Looking ahead, officials warned that dropping water levels are impacting access at Pathfinder Reservoir. While staff recently installed a boat dock at the marina boat ramp, the water is receding at a rate of eight feet per month.
