The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided more than $3.51 billion to individuals and families affected by the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon fire and flooding in New Mexico.
Background
The Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon Fire was the largest and most destructive wildfire in the history of New Mexico. The fire began on April 6, 2022, when the U.S. Forest Service lost control of the Las Dispensas prescribed burn in the Santa Fe National Forest.
Attorney Brian Colón, who represents hundreds of survivors affected by the fires and floods, expressed his disappointment with FEMA’s announcement, stating that the agency was taking a victory lap despite many victims still waiting for compensation.
Colón emphasized that the federal judge has agreed with their position that these victims deserve to be fully compensated, but FEMA has continued to delay and appeal those decisions.
