OpenAI’s chief of applications, Fidji Simo, announced she will step down from her full-time role and transition to a part-time advisory position at the ChatGPT maker after an extended medical leave. Simo had been on medical leave for three months due to a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness she has lived with for seven years.
Simo was among the three directors that joined OpenAI’s board in March 2024 after Sam Altman returned as CEO. Altman expressed his gratitude for Simo’s contributions to OpenAI, saying he is “really sad” about her decision to step down.
