The Saharan dust has arrived in Central Florida and is expected to stay through the weekend, affecting air quality.
Impact on Air Quality
According to WESH 2’s First Warning Weather Chief Meteorologist Tony Mainolfi, the dust may even thicken over the weekend, leading to moderate air quality.
Although the air isn’t the healthiest, Mainolfi said there will be beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
The dust is carried westward by trade winds from the Sahara Desert, making its way across the Atlantic Ocean to the U.S.
This phenomenon peaks in the summer months and can have additional impacts, such as absorbing moisture and limiting widespread rainfall and storm coverage.
The dust can also affect people’s and animals’ health.
