Anthony Volpe, the New York Yankees’ shortstop, has denied a report that he refused to play second base while in Triple-A this season. The report has since been retracted.
Volpe’s Response
Volpe called the report ‘B.S.’ and stated that he would do anything to help the team win. He explained that he had been working as a shortstop during his rehab assignment and was not approached about switching positions until José Caballero came off the injured list in May.
Volpe also mentioned that he had been checking in with the Yankees during the offseason and was told to be ready to play shortstop. When he was optioned to Triple-A, he told manager Aaron Boone that he would play catcher or any other position the team needed.
Boone praised Volpe’s character and team-first mindset, saying that he would do anything to help the team win. Volpe has had his moments with the team, but consistency has been an issue through parts of four seasons.
