Michigan Inmate Seeks Transfer Due to Mold Exposure

A federal court is being asked to order the immediate transfer of a Michigan prison inmate due to concerns about her medical condition and alleged exposure to toxic mold. Attorneys representing Krystal Clark, an inmate at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility, filed the emergency motion on Monday.

Health Concerns

Clark has been incarcerated at the facility since 2011 and has a documented severe allergy to mold. She has experienced respiratory symptoms, including chronic coughing, coughing up blood, and nasal bleeding. Recent clinical testing found Aspergillus mold growing inside Clark’s ears, resulting in a fungal tissue infection and contributing to rapid hearing loss.

Her attorneys argue that the conditions at the prison have created a serious medical risk for Clark and are asking the court to require her removal from the facility. They are seeking a transfer to an outside medical environment where Clark would no longer be exposed to the alleged toxic mold.

Broader Context

Clark is part of a broader class-action lawsuit filed against the state in 2019, which alleges that inmates have been exposed to toxic black mold, a deteriorating heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, and ongoing roof leaks. The lawsuit also references recent reports of four women incarcerated at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility who have died since May.
