A Super El Niño is forecasted to be the most intense in decades, posing a significant threat to global weather patterns. In response, a group of scientists has investigated the potential of a controversial technique called solar geoengineering to temporarily mitigate the severe impacts of El Niño.

What is Solar Geoengineering?

Solar geoengineering involves spraying particles into ocean clouds to reflect sunlight away from the Earth and back into space, a process known as marine cloud brightening. This technique aims to reduce the amount of solar radiation the Earth absorbs, thereby cooling the planet.

The researchers, led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, used climate models to simulate the effect of marine cloud brightening on two historically strong El Niño events, one in 1997 and another in 2015. They found that targeted marine cloud brightening could weaken El Niño’s impacts and increase the cooling and drying effects associated with La Niña by 40%.

Challenges and Concerns

While the study’s findings are promising, the technique is still in its infancy, and many challenges and concerns need to be addressed. The technical difficulties of generating particles of the right size and quantity to produce the desired amount of cooling are significant. Additionally, there are ethical considerations, such as who would decide to deploy this technique and whether it would distract from efforts to reduce planet-heating pollution.

Experts also warn of the potential for unintended consequences, including the possibility of a mega La Niña event, which could bring extreme weather, such as increased rainfall and flooding in parts of Asia and Australia, and drier-than-normal conditions in parts of South America and the US.

Despite these challenges, the study’s authors believe that marine cloud brightening is worth further exploration as a potential tool to mitigate the severe impacts of El Niño. However, they emphasize that this technique should not be seen as a substitute for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are driving global climate change.
